Move Edge Device

The Move Edge Device function allows moving an Edge Device from a virtual set-up customer (that is only used for this purpose) to the final customer tenant without triggering a factory reset of the device.

This enables the Service Provider to install and configure applications on the Edge Device before delivering the machine to the final customer.

Pre-Conditions

This feature can not be used without the support of an SSH-Consultant: Please contact our support.

Service ProviderOperator

User roles for moving the Edge Device as a Service Provider are:

  • Customer Data Manager
  • Workshop Manager

in Service Provider user management.

  • The final customer (Operator) needs to be onboarded (and linked to the own tenant).
  • The target machine needs to be proposed, accepted by the final Operator and has no other edge device linked to it (Status = unconnected).

Create & Prepare the Workbench for the Set-Up Process

  • Log in to Secure Service Hub with a user having at least the Customer Data Manager user role (recommendation is to have Customer Data Manager and Workshop Manager, so that there is no need to switch accounts within the preparation).
  • Navigate to menu entry Customers.
  • Search for your set-up customer, that has been created with the help of an SSH-consultant for this purpose, within the column Customer by using the filter button .
  • Click on the set-up customer in the table.

The Customer Detail Page is displayed:

If the Machines list is empty or you want to create an additional workbench,

  • Click on .

else

  • Select a machine (in this case you can skip the next steps)
  • Create a new customer machine.
We recommend to use a dedicated Machine Model (in this case we called it "workbench") to avoid confusion with real machines (see Machines for details).

To be able to install applications, we do also need the Operator perspective on this Set-Up-Workbench machine.

  • Navigate to the created Set-Up-Workbench and click on the "Propose the machine to the customer" button :

The status of the machine changes to "proposed".

  • Navigate to Facilities ( (warning) you need to be logged in with a user with the Workshop-Manager user role to be able to perform this and the following steps).
  • Create a new facility by clicking on Create Facility, enter an identifier and click :

An asset proposal should be visible on the top of the page.

  • Assign the asset proposal to the corresponding facility and click .

The created workbench should be now in the state "Unconnected":

Prepare the Edge Device

After setting up the workbench(es), the Edge Device, that is later to be shipped to the customer, can be prepared:

  • Log in to Secure Service Hub with a user having both Customer Data Manager and Workshop Manager user roles assigned.
  • Navigate to menu entry Machines and go to your previously created workbench.
  • Click on and select the Edge Device to be configured from the list.
  • Click on .

Now you can prepare the Edge Device.

Move the Edge Device from the Workbench to the real Customer Machine

  • Log in to Secure Service Hub with a user having both Customer Data Manager and Workshop Manager user roles assigned.
  • Navigate to menu entry Machines.

  • Search for your set-up customer (that has been created with the help of a SSH consultant for this purpose) within the column Customer by using the filter button :

  • Make sure that the Status is "Connected". Else, check the preparation steps above.

If permitted, the user can find an additional button “Move Edge Device” within the customer machine entry.

The Edge Device should be moveable directly to another (the final) customer machine without a factory reset occurring.

After clicking the “Move Edge Device button, the detail view for moving the Edge Device opens:

  • Select the respective machine from the dropdown menu.
(warning) The status of the source machine has to be unconnected.

  • Click buttonto move the Edge Device to the target machine.
  • After confirmation, the Edge device is moved to the target machine without a factory reset and the (real) customer can start working with the preconfigured Edge Device.
