Commissioning and Configuration
The symmedia Plug&Work Box smart is configured according to specifications upon delivery and only needs to be physically connected to the existing networks for commissioning.
Due to differences in the configuration of the networks in the producing companies, changes to the network settings may still be necessary.
Basically, there are two ways to make these changes, one is to set them up with the help of the setup interface, the other is to set up the device, if several devices are to be set up in series, alternatively by means of a USB stick.
Security Information
The delivered configuration of the Edge Device is secure, changes to the configuration should be done with caution to not break the security of your network.
Commissioning the symmedia Plug&Work Box smart
- Connect the network cables:
- For configuration via the setup cockpit, connect the network cable to the LAN2 connection on the back of the box.
- To connect the box to the Internet, connect the network cable to the LAN1 connection on the back of the box. LED1 and LED2 on the front of the box light up green when the connection to the internet is successful.
NOTE! | |
---|---|
If a network cable is plugged in or unplugged from the WAN interface of the symmedia Plug&Work Box smart during operation, the device may not be able to find a network. - Disconnect the device from the power supply system and plug it in again. After the restart, the power supply system is detected. - Alternatively, only plug or unplug the network connector when the device is de-energized. |
- Optional: connect the supplied WLAN antennas to the antenna sockets, using WLAN antenna extension cables if necessary.
- Connect the device to the power supply system via the DC connector.
Default Module Installation
After successfully connecting the Edge Device with the Azure cloud, the device will install some containers for management and maintenance:
- edgeHub (Azure iotedge runtime)
- edgeAgent (Azure iotedge runtime)
- sshConfig (symmedia Hub configuration module)
- TEPSI (Tunnel Endpoint Protocol Service module)
The Tunnel Module (TEPSI) can only be used if the operator has given the permission in the symmedia Hub portal (see tunnel endpoint configuration).
Setup Cockpit
Starting the Setup Cockpit in LAN
- Connect the network cable to the LAN2 port.
- Assign an IP address in the range 192.168.214.X/24 (e.g., 192.168.214.2) on the PC.
- In the browser, call up the setup cockpit via the address https://192.168.214.1:9090:
- Enter username "sym-tech" and password "sym-tech" plus serial number of the box, e.g.
"sym-tech3205307s005" (without quotation marks), the checkbox "Reuse my password for privileged tasks." must be set. - Click on Log in.
The interface of the setup cockpit opens:
Changing the devices Hostname under Configuration will result in disconnect of the device from the cloud, thus no services like tunnel or VNC can be used any more.
If a change of the host name occurred by mistake, the host name has to be reset to the initial value and the device has to be rebooted.
Starting the Setup Cockpit in WLAN
- Connect to the access point "WLAN_" plus the serial number of the box, e.g., "WLAN_3215122s014".
- Enter the serial number of the box twice in succession as the password, e.g. "3215122s0143215122s014" (without quotation marks).

NOTE! | |
---|---|
The symmedia Plug&Work Box smart is delivered pre-configured. Normally, no further settings need to be made here. |
The network configuration is based on a zone principle with blue, red and green zone. Blue here denotes the WLAN, red stands for the LAN1 port and green for LAN2:
These zones can be found in the network settings of the symmedia Plug&Work Box smart under Interfaces:
The WLAN capability of the Edge Device can be deactivated by deleting the entry wlp1s0.
Attention: Reactivation of the WLAN reception can only be carried out by symmedia.
- Click on the respective entry to adjust the network configuration of an interface (here at the example of the red zone):
- To configure the IP address (IPv4), click on the entry behind IPv4 .
The menu for the IPv4 settings opens:
Any settings can be left on automatic or adjusted manually. Additional entries can be added at any time via the Ā button.
- To enter the IP address manually, click on the drop-down list under Addresses and change the entry from "Automatic (DHCP)" to "Manual":
- Enter IP address, prefix / netmask and gateway and click .
- Adding DNS servers, DNS search domains or additional routes is identical. Make entries and confirm with :
- Inserting multiple entries is possible at any time using theĀ button at the end of the line.
