Edge Device Migration from SP/1 to HUB

Migrating an Edge Device from symmedia SP/1 to symmedia Hub means saving costs.

Edge Devices that are already in operation by Service Providers can be repurposed when switching platforms.



These Edge Devices are tested and approved for migration:

  • symmedia Plug&Work Box Industrial
  • symmedia symmedia Plug&Work Box smart
  • symmedia Plug&Work Box Compact
  • Beckhoff IPC C60150020 and C6030

Important

Please donĀ“t migrate your hardware before you are instructed by your Service Provider!

In order to migrate, updating to the most recent symmedia SP/1 version ist mandatory.

The Migration Button only appears when the requirements are met.

The migration consists of these steps:




Update Preparation


Update symmedia SP/1 to newest Version


  1. Start your symmedia SP/1 client.
  2. Launch the Facility Configuration under Menu ā†’ Tools ā†’ Server Administration.

The Central tab checks the updates of the Site Control from the Central Server.

The Client tab can be used to update sources stored locally on the cockpit.

  • Switch to the Central tab under Update in the pop up menu.
  • Click theĀ  button.

If the message below states "The server is up to date.", nothing else needs to be done here.

If an update is available, the button is active.

  • Click the button to download the update.

When the download of the update is finished, theĀ  button is active.

  • Click the button to apply the update and restart your server.


Check the available Disk Space on your Hardware Box


  1. Start your symmedia SP/1 client.
  2. Launch the Remote Console under Menu ā†’ Tools ā†’ Remote Console.

  • In the Remote Console, Type in command df-h.

This will display the available space in the existing file system.

  • Check the space available in filesystem /dev/mapper/centosĀ­-opt.

lf less than 4.7 GB are available, please follow this section to free some space in your Edge Device.

If you need help with freeing space on your Edge Device, please contact the symmedia support.


Check and note Machine IP Address (Example)

symmedia SP/1 is already configured for your machine, including the IP address.

This information may be requested from your Service Provider after migration.

Please check and note this information before starting the migration.

  • In your symmedia SP/1 client, choose a machine from the facility tree and click in the Services menu.
  • Note your IP address from the pop up menu (here: , should be different for your machine.).




Launch Migration


Add Migration Panel to symmedia SP/1 Client


The Migration to symmedia Hub function must be manually enabled in the configuration, as it is not enabled in the default configuration.


  1. Start your symmedia SP/1 client.
  2. Launch the Server Administration under Menu ā†’ Tools ā†’ Server Administration.
  • In the Server Administration, check the Migration to symmedia Hub field in the Services panel.
  • Click the button in the task bar at the top to save the new configuration.
  • Confirm the dialogue to overwrite the current configuration by clicking .
  • Confirm the dialogue to save the configuration despite unique-value conflicts by clicking .
  • Confirm the dialogue to restart the server by clicking .


Migrate Edge Device


After restarting the server, you will find a newĀ  button in the Services panel.

  • Click on the button to initiate the migration.

A new window opens where you are asked to connect to the provisioning server.

  • Click onĀ  to proceed.

A status message ("Tunnel opened...") appears when the connection was successfully established.

  • Click on to proceed.

A window with a remote console opens within your symmedia SP/1 client.

  • Type start-migrate and press enter to start the migration.

  • Wait until the successful migration message appears in your remote console.
  • Note the displayed serial number of the Edge Device for further use.

When the update is finished, the Reboot button should be active.

  • Click theĀ  button to reboot your Edge Device.

After finishing the Edge Device migration, please contact your Service Provider to report that the migration has been carried out.

Your Service provider can then initiate the next steps.

Please also make sure to report the machine IP and serial number to the Service Provider with the success report.
